It's always been a mystery to me. When a Fortune 500 company lays off 5000 people its considered a restructuring and their stock price goes up. But, when a law firm gets rid of 20 unproductive partners they are seen as in "really big trouble". Why should that be the case?

When I was a kid I derived great pleasure just from knowing the name of the largest corporation in the world. General Motors was the answer. So what happened? I think a few things happened along the way to today. Rising gas prices happened, energy efficient cars happened, foreign competition happened and internal complacency, internal politics and greed happened.
