The 2013 Legal Marketing Association (LMA) Annual Conference is coming up soon, April 8–10 at the ARIA Resort in Las Vegas. We marketers realize the fantastic educational and networking opportunities offered by the LMA annual conference, as well as the value of regional and local LMA events. But do your firm attorneys have any idea how beneficial our trade association is for your firm and each of us individually? In most cases, probably not … but you can change that. Try implementing one or more of these tactics: 

  • Do your due diligence before the conference and schedule coffee breaks/appointments before and/or after scheduled events with those you want to meet. This will build your network and ensure that you can reach out and receive insights and advice that will benefit your firm.
  • Mentor your firm’s rising stars – invite a senior associate or junior partner with great marketing potential to join you at the conference. Make sure they spend time with you on networking, as well as attend educational sessions.
  • Build support from your marketing champions – invite your managing or marketing partner and/or an enthusiastic practice group leader to join you at the conference. Again, do some networking with them so they can see you in action.
  • Take copious notes during the conference and create marketing tips based on what you learn to distribute throughout your firm monthly.
  • Purchase conference materials and initiate “lunch & learn” training sessions for sharing the information with firm attorneys.
  • Select one or two concepts from the educational sessions that resonate with you and put them to practice immediately at your firm, being sure to let colleagues know where you found the information.
  • Plan to arrive at the conference early and stay just a bit late. This will enable you to take full advantage of a “once-a-year opportunity” and stay apprised of what is happening in the industry throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Shortly after the 2013 LMA conference, the Association of Legal Administrators holds its Annual Conference & Exposition at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., from April 14–17. Legal administrators, often charged with marketing oversight in small and mid-sized firms, can take advantage of these tips, too.
